Massachusetts offers free handicaps for high school golfers

Since we are a Massachusetts based organization, it is awesome to see news that your local state golf association is leading the way to help grow the game. Having a handicap at a young age is important for the development of junior golfers and think the Massachusetts Golf Association’s recent partnership with the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) is a natural fit. We hope other state golf associations and high school athletic associations see the value in this alignment and will follow suit.

4 Tips for coaching a high school golf team

Golf is a very different sport than many others given much of the team performance relies on individuals on the team playing their own ball. Coaching golf is even more difficult given your players are going to be scattered on a few different holes, players are varied in skill level from really good to beginners, and it is impossible for you to understand what is going on during an entire match since each player is playing their own game. For those of you that are new high school golf coaches, we wanted to share 4 important tips to prepare you for coaching a high school golf team.

Playing a varsity college sport at any level is an amazing experience, especially if you are able to land one of the coveted college golf scholarships. Ranking the Top 5 High School Golf Teams

Starting in 2016, The National High School Golf Association started ranking the top high school golf teams in the United States. All of these rankings are based solely on the state high school golf tournaments from the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 seasons. All state tournament scores were calculated and ranked using the USGA Handicap formula to ensure a stable benchmark for golf course host sites. Calculation = ((Gross player score by day – rating) * 113/slope )). So who are the top 5 high school golf teams for the 2016-2017 season?

An alternative to playing varsity college golf

As a former high school golfer and now golf coach at St Xavier High School in Cincinnati, OH, I have seen every type of golfer come through over the past 10 years. From collegiate Division 1 scholarship recipients to golfers who shoot in 100’s, it has been great getting to witness and help shape these golfers’ futures.

As a coach, one of the things I get asked most often is “what does it take for me to play varsity golf in college?” For some (and I do mean some), D1 scholarships are a reality especially for those who average around par. For many, their competitive golf career of playing on a team ends when the caps are thrown at graduation. Not so fast….
